Sangam literature works: Ettuthogai, Pathuppattu and Pathinenkilkanakku
On this page
Sangam literature is the oldest body of Tamil poetry, composed roughly between the 3rd century BCE and the 3rd century CE (the dating is debated). It consists of the Ettuthogai (eight anthologies) and the Pathuppattu (ten long poems), with the grammar Tholkappiyam as the earliest surviving text on language. The 18 didactic works of the Pathinenkilkanakku, which include the Thirukkural, are usually taught with it, although they come slightly later.
Ettuthogai: the eight anthologies
| Work | Theme | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Natrinai | Love (akam) | 400 poems in a mix of metres |
| Kurunthogai | Love (akam) | Short poems, usually 4 to 8 lines |
| Aingurunooru | Love (akam) | Five hundred short poems, 100 for each landscape |
| Pathitruppathu | War and praise (puram) | Praises ten Chera kings, ten poems each; the first and last decades are lost |
| Paripadal | Devotion | Songs on Thirumal, Murugan and the river Vaigai, in the paripadal metre |
| Kalithogai | Love | Composed in the kali metre |
| Akananooru | Love (akam) | 400 long poems |
| Purananooru | Kings, war and life (puram) | 400 poems; includes the line "Yaadhum Oore Yaavarum Kelir" |
A well-known memory aid is the verse that lists the eight in order: Natrinai, Kurunthogai, Aingurunooru, Pathitruppathu, Paripadal, Kalithogai, Akananooru and Purananooru.
Pathuppattu: the ten idylls
| Work | Author |
|---|---|
| Thirumurugatruppadai | Nakkirar |
| Porunararruppadai | Mudathamakanniyar |
| Sirupanatruppadai | Nathathanar |
| Perumpanatruppadai | Kadiyalur Uruthirankannanar |
| Mullaippattu | Napputhanar |
| Madurai Kanchi | Mangudi Maruthanar |
| Nedunalvadai | Nakkirar |
| Kurinjippattu | Kapilar |
| Pattinappalai | Kadiyalur Uruthirankannanar |
| Malaipadukadam (Kooththararruppadai) | Perunkausikanar |
Five of these are aatruppadai poems (Thirumurugatruppadai, Porunararruppadai, Sirupanatruppadai, Perumpanatruppadai and Malaipadukadam) that direct a poet or performer to a generous patron. Pattinappalai describes the port of Puhar under Karikala Chola. Madurai Kanchi describes Madurai under the Pandya king Nedunchezhiyan. Thirumurugatruppadai is the devotional one: it guides a seeker to the abodes of Murugan.
Pathinenkilkanakku: the 18 minor works
These are mostly ethical and didactic, and they are separate from the Sangam anthologies. The list is Naladiyar, Nanmanikadigai, Inna Narpathu, Iniyavai Narpathu, Kar Narpathu, Kalavazhi Narpathu, Ainthinai Aimpathu, Thinaimozhi Aimpathu, Ainthinai Ezhupathu, Thinaimalai Nooraimpathu, Thirukkural, Thirikadugam, Aachaarakkovai, Pazhamozhi Nanooru, Sirupanchamoolam, Mudumozhi Kanji, Elathi and Kainnilai. The Naladiyar, a collection of quatrains, is called the "Vellalar Vedam" in some textbooks, and the Thirukkural of Thiruvalluvar is the most famous. See the Thirukkural section for the full text.
Tholkappiyam, themes and poets
- Tholkappiyam, by Tholkappiyar, is the oldest surviving Tamil grammar. It has three books: Ezhuthathikaram (letters), Solathikaram (words) and Porulathikaram (subject matter, which covers akam and puram).
- Akam and puram. Akam poems are about love, and puram poems are about public life, war, kingship and charity. The five landscapes (thinai) are Kurinji (hills, union), Mullai (forest, patient waiting), Marutham (farmland, quarrels), Neithal (seashore, anxiety) and Paalai (dry land, separation).
- Poets. Frequently asked names are Kapilar, Paranar, Nakkirar, Mangudi Maruthanar, Kaniyan Poongundranar (the author of "Yaadhum Oore Yaavarum Kelir" in Purananooru), and women poets such as Avvaiyar, Kakkaipadiniyar Nachchellaiyar and Vellivithiyar.
- Three Sangams. Tradition speaks of three Sangams (Thalai, Idai and Kadai) at Madurai and earlier cities. Historians treat this as legend and use the surviving anthologies as evidence.
Why the Sangam texts matter for history questions
The poems are the main literary source for the Cheras, Cholas and Pandyas, for ports like Musiri and Puhar, for trade with Rome, and for the ways of life in the five landscapes. Excavations such as the ones at Keezhadi and Kodumanal are discussed against this literature (see archaeological sites of Tamil Nadu). For the political background, see the ancient dynasties of Tamil Nadu.
Frequently asked questions
How many poems are in the Ettuthogai?
The eight anthologies together contain more than 2,000 poems, though the exact count differs because some poems and whole sections are lost, for example from Pathitruppathu. Learn the names and themes rather than the totals.
Which Sangam work is the oldest grammar book?
The Tholkappiyam by Tholkappiyar is the oldest surviving Tamil grammar and is usually placed at the base of the Sangam tradition. Its exact date is debated.
Who wrote Thirumurugatruppadai?
Nakkirar wrote it and also Nedunalvadai. It is the opening work of the Pathuppattu in many editions.
Is the Thirukkural a Sangam work?
It belongs to the Pathinenkilkanakku, the group of 18 works that follow the Sangam anthologies. Many textbooks still discuss it in the Sangam chapter because it is part of the "Sangam period" in the broad sense.
Which Sangam book is about the Chera kings?
Pathitruppathu praises ten Chera kings, with ten poems for each king, though two of the ten decades are not available now.
