Bird sanctuaries of Tamil Nadu: list with districts
On this page
Tamil Nadu's best-known bird sanctuaries are Vedanthangal in Chengalpattu district, Point Calimere in Nagapattinam, Koonthankulam in Tirunelveli, Vellode in Erode and the Pulicat Lake sanctuary in Thiruvallur. The Forest Department's overview speaks of fifteen bird sanctuaries, but more wetlands have been notified in recent years, so lists differ between sources. Learn the district for each, because that is how the question is asked.

When the birds arrive
Most sanctuaries in the list are shallow tanks that fill with the north-east monsoon. Birds that breed there include painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, egrets, herons, spoonbills and cormorants, and winter visitors arrive from northern Asia along the Central Asian Flyway, mostly between October and March. If the monsoon fails, the tanks stay dry and the season is poor. See climate and monsoon of Tamil Nadu.
Short notes on most-asked items
- Oldest. Vedanthangal, where villagers have protected the birds for generations because their droppings fertilise the fields.
- Largest brackish lagoon. Pulicat, after Chilika in Odisha.
- Ramanathapuram. The district has four bird-sanctuary Ramsar sites, so expect a question about it.
- Flamingos. Point Calimere and Pulicat host greater flamingos in the cold season.
- State bird. Tamil Nadu's state bird is the emerald dove.
- Not the same as national parks. A bird sanctuary is notified under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. See national parks of Tamil Nadu for the stricter category.
Many of these sanctuaries are also Ramsar sites. The full list of designated wetlands is on Ramsar sites in Tamil Nadu.
How to revise
Sort the table by district and learn the clusters: Chengalpattu has Vedanthangal and Karikili, Tiruvarur has Udhayamarthandapuram and Vaduvur, and Ramanathapuram has the largest group. Then learn the odd ones: Pulicat (lagoon), Point Calimere (coastal), Nanjarayan (western Tamil Nadu). Revise alongside the TNPSC geography guide.
